If Augusta, Georgia, is ever big on something, at the top of a very short list of big things is, of course, golf. It seems to me that this city has more golf courses than any other in America. And everywhere you look, there are reminders both glaring and subtle, that this is a golfing kind of town. At a giant sports chain in Augusta Mall, almost a fourth of the floor area is devoted to golf. Hanging in the hallways and lobbies of the historic Partridge Inn are paintings and pictures and mementoes of anything and everything about golf, and inside my hotel room, the one pictures here, is a somewhat abstract oil painting on canvas of a golf course. Yes, this is a city that plays golf.
